Mr William Wilson has an exceptional academic portfolio boasting 30 peer-reviewed publications and 65 presentations at international and national conferences. He is an award winning researcher with honours including best presentation in 2009, 2018 and 2021 and British Orthopaedic Association ‘Best of the Best’ finalist in 2019. He has attracted £25000 in grant awards as chief investigator including the British Association of Sport & Exercise Medicine Research Bursary 2019.
Main research interests include, knee ligament injuries, biomechanics, sports and computer assisted surgery. Mr Wilson is Chief investigator for an ongoing project as part of a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from University of Strathclyde, focusing on the clinical, biomechanical and functional outcomes following anterior cruciate ligament surgery. This work examines the application of internal bracing for primary ligament repair augmentation and comparison with conventional ACL reconstruction. Mr Wilson has been closely involved in the research behind the Internal Brace concept, developed in Glasgow by close colleague Prof Gordon MacKay. Learn more about the Internal Brace below.
Internal Brace
The Internal Brace is a synthetic augmentation device, used as a ‘seat belt’ to strengthen and protect ligament repair or reconstructions. Adding the Internal Brace increases the strength of the overall construct and protects it during the crucial healing period. This permits accelerated rehabilitation, promoting faster recovery and quicker return to sport. In addition, the Internal Brace acts to reduce the risk of future injury after return to sport. Mr Wilson uses Internal Bracing for most of his sports knee surgeries and has extensively researched this area. He is part of the pioneering Internal Brace International Study Group, a select group of international experts who come together to investigate and promote the benefits of the technique for patients across the world.
